Alpine Rock: 3+ Days

Discover the exhilaration of climbing and traversing awesome granite spires in the remote Cascade Mountains of British Columbia!

Discover the exhilaration of climbing and traversing awesome granite spires in the warm, dry Cascade Mountains of British Columbia’s Cathedral Provincial Park. Alpine Rock allows you the opportunity to learn while climbing technical summits with a professional guide. This program can be customized to fit your needs, whether you prefer an experiential guided trip or a technical training course.

You begin by hiking into Cathedral Provincial Park to reach your alpine meadows base camp. Your camp, located at 6,700’, is surrounded by walls of 8,500’+ tall granite spires and ridges, many of which you will climb over the duration of your stay. Your base camp is strategically located, providing short access to the start of your climbs with quick, easy descents back to camp at the end of each day.

If your capable group is large enough to hire two Guides at a 2:1 ratio, then we can offer you the McCabre – Grimface Traverse. This ultra-classic route includes two stunning tyrolean traverses between granite spires, suspending you 1,800’ above the valley floor! Sunshine, granite, technical summits and traverses, unspoiled scenery, no crowds – spectacular! Allow us to guide you or your group for an ultimate peak experience.

Crevasse Rescue: 1 or 2 Days

Self-reliance is key in the mountain environment. Essential knowledge for summer mountaineers or ski tourers includes the ability to perform a self-rescue in glaciated terrain. Crevasse Rescue gives you a working knowledge using the minimum equipment required to perform a successful rescue. All of these systems meet professional Association of Canadian Mountain Guide standards.

Skills include; glacier travel, knots and rope management, snow and ice anchors, securing a fallen climber, escaping the belay or tie-in system, advanced rappels using a back-up system, prussic systems, Z-pulley systems, lowering systems, tandem rappels and counter-balance rappels.

Unless you have prior experience and only need 1-day to review your present rescue system, we recommend the full 2-day course. On our 2-day course, the first day is a dry-land practice session while the second day is on snow. For a 1-day course, we could look at either a dry-land session or a snow session. This course will attempt to find snow in local vicinities in the Okanagan Valley, conditions permitting.

The goal of this program is to give you the skills and knowledge to successfully facilitate an improvised rescue with nothing more than what a mountaineer or ski tourer would regularly carry with them in glaciated terrain.

Prerequisites: Basic Rock, Mountaineering or similar rope handling experience.
